Andy Naylor went to speak with Henri, on an Unseen Tour, which takes  visitors on an “entertaining and poignant” walk with professionally coached homeless guides. Not your average tourist trip. Follow Andy on Twitter here @andynaylor81   Regaling the crowd with an opening anecdote, tour guide Henri comes across as confident, witty and completely at ease with...

Learning by doing: Getting out the hard way

Sitting in his office on the second floor of a South London comprehensive, Karim * looks like any young teaching professional in London. All the kids who see him during our walk to the office great him with warmth and respect. Many of these children come from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds and are likely...

Hell Plates: One man’s quest for a little pink card

There are many things I love about living In London. The fact that even at the tender age of thirty I never feel weird about being childless, un married or in a secure job, The wide ranging choice of post pub snack to assist the process of sobering up on a school night and...

Crime and Consequences

Walking through a quiet Housing Estate in North London, I am struggling to find my intended destination. With the new build flats and businesses all looking very similar, I draw on the memory of the previous days phone conversation I had with Ex Offender turned Youth Worker Tony. Rounding a corner I realise that...

Hackney woman stands up to looters.

By
05/08/2011

As London suffered it’s third night of violence, one woman in Hackney has been praised for standing up to the rioters and telling the groups of looters to stop their violence, claiming she was ashamed to be a “Hackney person” as a result of their actions.

Pauline Pearce, 45, a grandmother, jazz singer and community radio activist, shook her walking stick at youths, told them they were looters without a cause and said it made her ashamed to come from Hackney

Known as “Lady P” she has a Monday afternoon show on “Conscious FM” which she calls “More Love” and has run a community project called “Do something for Life.”

The video of her speech was originally filmed by the Daily Telegraph’s Matthew Moore but has since been uploaded onto YouTube and one version has already been watched over one million times.

Viewers of the clip have praised the unnamed woman’s bravery, with many agreeing with her claim that the groups are no longer ‘fighting for a cause’ and are instead ruining people’s livelihoods.

England’s title hopes dealt devastating blow

The sun was out and the crowds started drinking early. The Kenyan ranks massed in the North West corner of Twickenham Stadium. Kiwis, Saffa’s and Aussies united (for once) in a haze of cold beer and bonhomie
